China Leads Global Surge in Patent, Trademark, and Design Filings in 2016, WIPO Reports

Innovators worldwide filed a total of 3.1 million patent applications in 2016, marking an 8.3 percent increase and continuing a seven-year upward trend, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) annual World Intellectual Property Indicators report.

China was the primary driver of this growth, accounting for approximately 98 percent of the increase with about 236,600 additional patent filings out of the nearly 240,600 global rise.

Trademark applications experienced a significant jump of 16.4 percent, reaching around seven million filings globally. Similarly, industrial design applications grew by 10.4 percent to nearly one million. Both categories saw growth predominantly fueled by China’s expanding intellectual property activity.

WIPO Director General Francis Gurry emphasized the ongoing impact of China on global intellectual property trends, stating, “The latest figures charting a rise in demand for intellectual property rights confirm a decade-long trend, where developments in China increasingly leave their mark on the worldwide totals. China is increasingly amongst the leaders in global innovation and branding.”

In 2016, China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) received a record 1.3 million patent applications, the highest volume worldwide. It was followed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) with 605,571 applications, the Japan Patent Office (JPO) at 318,381, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) with 208,830, and the European Patent Office (EPO) at 159,358.

Despite China’s leading total filings, per-capita patent application rates were higher in Germany, Japan, South Korea, and the United States.

Asia’s share of global patent applications rose substantially over the decade, increasing from 49.7 percent in 2006 to 64.6 percent in 2016, largely driven by China’s surge. Patent offices across Asia collectively received just over two million applications in 2016.

Trademark filings worldwide reached an estimated seven million applications covering 9.77 million classes, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth. This represents a 16.4 percent increase compared to 2015.

Mr. Gurry noted the growing importance of trademarks, stating, “The number of trademarks being sought around the world has increased three-fold since 2001, reflecting the importance of protecting branding assets in today’s business environment.”

China’s trademark office led global activity with approximately 3.7 million class counts, followed by the United States at 545,587, Japan at 451,320, the European Union at 369,970, and India at 313,623.

Industrial design filings also saw robust growth, with an estimated 963,100 applications containing 1.2 million designs filed worldwide in 2016, representing a 10.4 percent increase. Design counts grew by 8.3 percent, again primarily driven by China’s strong performance.

China’s office received applications containing 650,344 designs, accounting for 52 percent of the global total. The European Union followed with 104,522 designs, then South Korea with 69,120, Germany with 56,188, and Turkey with 46,305.

Among the top 20 offices, the fastest growth in design counts was observed in Iran with a 34.8 percent increase, followed by Ukraine at 17.4 percent, China at 14.3 percent, and the United States at 12.1 percent.

These figures underscore China’s expanding role as a global leader in intellectual property filings, reflecting its growing innovation capacity and strategic emphasis on protecting intellectual assets across patents, trademarks, and industrial designs.
