Epic and Disney have introduced their most extensive intellectual property toolset to date, enabling developers to create Star Wars-themed games within Fortnite

Epic Games, in collaboration with Disney, has unveiled a set of creation tools that let fans design their own Star Wars-themed games within Fortnite. This initiative grants developers the ability to craft themed islands using the Star Wars toolkit within the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fortnite Creative, or to adapt current islands into Star Wars settings within UEFN.

The toolkit is Fortnite’s most extensive intellectual property offering to date, presenting various Star Wars templates, tools, new gameplay features, and numerous assets including characters, settings, vehicles, and weapons from past Battle Royale seasons themed around Star Wars.

Among the new elements are custom options for lightsabers and force powers within UEFN, alongside refreshed user interface features and fonts inspired by Star Wars.

Epic has provided four starting islands in UEFN as templates, and introduced two fresh Star Wars flat grid islands available in Fortnite Creative. Furthermore, new games titled Galactic Siege, Escape Vader, and Droid Tycoon have been launched, developed in partnership with Jogo Studios, Beyond Creative, and FOAD, respectively.

Additions are in the pipeline, including support for first-person weapon use, tailored items, and inventory management.

Star Wars-themed islands can be released through the Creator Portal, adding a new Star Wars Game collection page within Discover. Developers wanting to publish these islands need to enroll in the Fortnite Developer Program and agree to further terms through the Creator Portal.

The publication of these islands with Star Wars content entails sharing 20% of the engagement revenue with The Walt Disney Company, and all content must adhere to the Star Wars Brand Rules, while avoiding internal transactions.

Sean Shoptaw, the executive VP of Disney Games and Digital Entertainment, remarked on the rising influence of interactive entertainment in narrative experiences. He highlighted that games provide a significant method for enhancing engagement, expanding universes, and connecting with fans interactively.

In 2024, Disney revealed a significant $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games and announced a strategic partnership aimed at creating an "open, persistent, social universe" through Fortnite, offering players an environment to "watch, shop, and engage with content, characters, and stories" from Disney's wide-ranging library.
