Federal Executive Council Endorses New Policies on IP Commercialization, Digital Trade, and Service Export

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) of Nigeria has formally approved a set of policies targeting the commercialization of intellectual property, digital trade, and service export. This decision marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to harness intellectual assets and digital technologies to drive economic development.

The newly approved policies aim to create a robust framework that facilitates the effective commercialization of intellectual property rights. By doing so, the government intends to encourage innovation, protect creators’ rights, and enable the monetization of IP assets across various sectors.

In addition to intellectual property commercialization, the policies address the growing importance of digital trade. Recognizing the transformative impact of digital platforms on commerce, the FEC’s endorsement seeks to establish regulatory and operational guidelines that will enhance Nigeria’s participation in the digital economy.

Furthermore, the policies emphasize the expansion of service exports, aiming to diversify Nigeria’s export base beyond traditional goods. By promoting service-oriented industries, the government expects to increase foreign exchange earnings and create new employment opportunities.

These initiatives collectively reflect Nigeria’s strategic vision to integrate intellectual property management, digital trade facilitation, and service export promotion into its broader economic agenda.

The FEC’s approval signals a commitment to fostering an enabling environment for innovators, entrepreneurs, and service providers. It also aligns with global trends where intellectual property and digital trade are pivotal drivers of economic growth.

Stakeholders in the legal, business, and technology sectors are anticipated to play crucial roles in implementing these policies. Their engagement will be vital to translating policy objectives into tangible outcomes.

As Nigeria moves forward with these policies, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms will be essential to assess their impact and ensure continuous improvement in the country’s intellectual property and digital trade landscape.
