Global patent filings surged to unprecedented levels in 2022, propelled primarily by innovators from India and China, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization's (WIPO) annual World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) report. Despite a decline in trademark and industrial design applications, the total number of patent applications worldwide reached 3.46 million, continuing a three-year growth trend.
China, the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Germany ranked as the top five countries for patent filings in 2022. Chinese applicants alone accounted for nearly half of all global patent applications, submitting approximately 1.58 million filings. However, China's growth rate slowed for the second consecutive year, decreasing from 6.8% in 2021 to 3.1% in 2022.
In contrast, India experienced a remarkable 31.6% increase in patent applications, extending an 11-year streak of growth unmatched by any other nation within the top ten filers. This surge positions India as a significant driver of global patent activity.
WIPO Director General Daren Tang emphasized the dual forces shaping the intellectual property landscape: "IP filings have braved the pandemic to continue to grow, powered by increased levels of innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship and digitalization in all parts of the world. Developing countries are increasingly engines of IP, showing the greatest growth rates as they harness the innovation and creative potential of their people. However, uncertainty continues to weigh on the global innovation ecosystem, with venture capital funding dropping in many parts of the world. We urge investors to pursue quality, but not at the expense of supporting good ideas that can change the world for the better."
Trademark application class counts fell by 14.5% in 2022, reversing the extraordinary growth seen in 2020 and 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated shifts in work and lifestyle patterns, prompting new goods and services to enter the market. Industrial design filings also declined by 2.1%, following four years of growth.
Asia remains the dominant region for intellectual property filings, accounting for 67.9% of patent applications, 67.8% of trademark filings, and 70.3% of industrial design activity worldwide in 2022. This reflects a continuing long-term trend of Asia as the global hub for IP activity.
Among the top 20 countries by patent filings, 13 reported increases in 2022 compared to 2021. Besides India, notable growth was observed in Switzerland (+6.1%), China (+3.1%), Austria (+2.5%), and the United Kingdom (+2.5%). For China and India, growth was driven mainly by resident filings, whereas Austria, Switzerland, and the UK saw growth primarily from filings abroad.
In terms of technology sectors, data from 2021—the latest year with complete information—showed computer technology as the most frequently featured field in published patent applications globally, representing 11.1% of the total. This was followed by electrical machinery (6.4%), measurement (5.8%), medical technology (5.2%), and digital communication (4.9%). Between 2011 and 2021, chemical engineering (+11.4%), computer technology (+11%), and IT methods for management (+13.7%) demonstrated double-digit growth.
Trademark filings totaled an estimated 11.8 million applications covering 15.5 million classes worldwide in 2022. Despite the recent decline in class counts, the long-term trend for trademark filings remains positive, though it has been distorted by pandemic-related fluctuations.
The WIPI report aggregates data from approximately 150 intellectual property offices globally, providing detailed country-level insights into domestic and international filings. The report underscores the resilience and evolving dynamics of the global IP ecosystem amid ongoing economic and geopolitical uncertainties.
