Guidelines and Approval Process for Third-Party Use of UK Intellectual Property Office Logo

The UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has published detailed instructions regarding the authorized use of its official logo by third parties. Entities interested in using the IPO logo must submit an application via the IPO’s digital logo request form. Alternatively, a PDF version of the form is available for download and can be submitted by email to designandprint@ipo.gov.uk.

Each application undergoes an individual assessment to verify compliance with the IPO’s established criteria. Upon approval, applicants receive comprehensive guidelines outlining the correct usage, placement, and required logo format.

The IPO permits third-party use of its logo only in specific contexts. These include activities, programmes, or events directly organized or co-organized by the IPO alongside other parties. Additionally, the logo may be used for activities not organized by the IPO but where the office participates or provides support, such as through speakers, sponsorship, financial assistance, promotion, use of premises, or other agreed collaborations.

Use of the IPO logo is also authorized for activities conducted under bilateral agreements between the IPO and a stakeholder or institution. Similarly, events or programmes carried out pursuant to contracts between the IPO and suppliers qualify for logo use.

Importantly, the IPO logo must be used in its entirety without distortion, modification, or separation of its component elements. The guidelines explicitly prohibit any use that might imply or suggest unintended endorsement or promotion of the user’s objectives or activities by the IPO.

Permission to use the IPO logo does not confer any exclusive rights to the applicant. The IPO retains ownership and control over the logo’s use to maintain its integrity and prevent misuse.

The IPO also encourages feedback to improve its services and invites users to participate in a survey regarding their visit to the GOV.UK website.

These measures ensure that the IPO’s branding is consistently represented and that third-party use aligns with the office’s official activities and partnerships. Entities seeking to leverage the IPO logo should carefully adhere to the application process and usage guidelines to avoid unauthorized or improper use.
