Huawei Sets $0.50 Royalty Fee for Wi-Fi 7 Patent Licensing to Boost Industry Adoption

Huawei has officially disclosed its patent licensing royalty rate for Wi-Fi 7 technologies, establishing a fee of $0.50 per consumer-grade Wi-Fi 7 device that complies with the latest IEEE 802.11be wireless networking standard. This announcement is intended to enhance transparency and predictability for manufacturers as Wi-Fi 7 adoption expands across consumer electronics sectors.

Wi-Fi 7, the next-generation wireless standard, promises significant improvements over its predecessors, including higher throughput, reduced latency, and enhanced network reliability. These advancements are expected to support emerging applications such as AI-enabled devices, immersive entertainment experiences, and sophisticated smart home ecosystems.

Huawei emphasized its position as one of the largest holders of declared essential patents related to Wi-Fi 7. The company has invested over a decade in developing technologies that contributed to the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. By the end of 2024, Huawei’s patent licensing agreements reportedly covered more than 1.2 billion consumer electronic devices worldwide.

Under the newly introduced licensing program, manufacturers can secure licenses either through direct bilateral agreements with Huawei or via patent pools operating under Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms. This dual approach aims to accommodate different licensing preferences within the industry.

Huawei also highlighted its ongoing participation in patent pool licensing initiatives. The company was a founding member of the Sisvel Wi-Fi 6 patent pool in 2022, acting as both licensor and licensee. It has since expanded its involvement by joining the Sisvel Wi-Fi Multimode pool, which offers access to essential patents covering both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 technologies through a unified licensing framework.

The patent pool model is designed to simplify the licensing process for manufacturers while reducing transaction costs, fostering a more efficient ecosystem for technology deployment.

Alan Fan, Huawei’s Chief Intellectual Property Officer, stated, “Through these initiatives, Huawei continues to facilitate collaborative licensing models that balance the interests of innovators and implementers, further reinforcing its leadership in shaping a transparent and efficient global Wi-Fi licensing environment.”

Further details about Huawei’s Wi-Fi 7 licensing program are available on the company’s intellectual property licensing website, providing manufacturers and stakeholders with comprehensive information on licensing options and terms.

This development comes as the wireless industry prepares for widespread adoption of Wi-Fi 7, which is expected to enable new use cases and enhance user experiences across multiple device categories.

Huawei’s strategic approach to licensing reflects broader trends in the technology sector, where collaborative patent pools and transparent royalty frameworks are increasingly critical to fostering innovation and market growth.

The company’s commitment to FRAND licensing and participation in patent pools underscores its role in promoting a balanced and accessible intellectual property environment for Wi-Fi technologies worldwide.

As Wi-Fi 7 devices enter the market, Huawei’s licensing program aims to support manufacturers with predictable costs and streamlined access to essential patents, facilitating faster deployment of next-generation wireless capabilities.

This announcement aligns with ongoing industry efforts to standardize licensing practices and reduce barriers to technology adoption, benefiting both patent holders and implementers.

Huawei’s leadership in Wi-Fi patent licensing continues to influence the global wireless ecosystem, positioning the company as a key player in the evolution of connectivity standards.
