Innobiz Association and Intellectual Property Office Collaborate on Expanded Super-Fast Patent Examination Briefing

On May 14, the Innobiz Association hosted a "Super-Fast Examination System Briefing" in collaboration with the Patent System Division of the Intellectual Property Office at the association's main conference room. The event was designed to familiarize Innobiz member companies and startups with the recently expanded Super-Fast Examination System.

Introduced in October of the previous year, the Super-Fast Examination System provides patent examination results within a maximum of one month, a substantial reduction from the typical processing time exceeding 14 months. The system focuses on fields characterized by rapid technological advancement and high growth potential.

Initially, the system supported up to 500 cases annually, primarily for companies demonstrating export performance or for advanced technologies such as semiconductors and displays, particularly in overseas patent applications. However, starting this year, the Intellectual Property Office has expanded the system's capacity to 2,000 cases per category, totaling 4,000 cases annually, and broadened the scope of eligible technologies.

A notable development in 2024 is the introduction of dedicated tracks for artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology sectors, specifically targeting startups, venture businesses, and Innobiz-certified companies. This expansion aims to facilitate rapid patent rights acquisition, enabling these companies to strengthen their competitive position in the market.

During the briefing, detailed guidelines and procedural information were provided to address potential unfamiliarity with the system among companies. The session covered the entire process, from application submission and eligibility assessment to the commencement and conclusion of the examination.

Additionally, participants benefited from a practical lecture on "tailored IP acquisition strategies," followed by a question-and-answer segment featuring patent experts. This interactive component allowed companies to discuss challenges and receive expert advice on navigating the patent examination process efficiently.

A representative of the Innobiz Association emphasized the significance of the Super-Fast Examination System as a transformative support measure for companies operating in advanced industries where speed is critical. The representative stated, "The association will continue to provide comprehensive policy support to help member companies leverage their technological strengths for rapid market entry."

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to invigorate innovation-driven enterprises by reducing administrative barriers and accelerating intellectual property protection, which is vital in sectors such as semiconductors, AI, and biotechnology.

The briefing reflects a proactive approach by both the Innobiz Association and the Intellectual Property Office to ensure that emerging and growth-stage companies can capitalize on their innovations promptly, thereby enhancing South Korea's competitiveness in the global technology landscape.
