Jaguar Land Rover and Chery Collaborate to Relaunch Freelander Electric SUV at Shanghai Investment Forum

Senior officials from Abu Dhabi convened at The Peninsula Shanghai on June 11 for a private session that doubled as the public debut of the Freelander 8, marking the return of a nameplate absent from showrooms for years. This revival results from a collaboration between British automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chinese manufacturer Chery, blending British design with Chinese electric powertrain technology and supply chain management.

Lucia Mao, chief executive of FREELANDER International, addressed attendees at the investment forum, outlining a strategic plan to launch the brand first in Abu Dhabi before expanding to 90 countries and establishing 1,100 retail touchpoints within five years. The Middle East’s selection as the initial market reflects the region’s robust demand for premium SUVs and favorable economic conditions, positioning it ahead of European and Chinese markets in the rollout sequence.

The original Freelander debuted in 1997 as Land Rover’s entry-level SUV but was discontinued as JLR refocused on Range Rover and Discovery models. The 2026 iteration retains the Freelander name but represents a fundamentally different product: an electric vehicle manufactured with Chinese expertise and targeting Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states rather than traditional UK markets.

The event was attended by prominent UAE officials, including H.E. Hussain Bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, UAE ambassador to China; H.E. Rashed Al Blooshi, chief executive of the Abu Dhabi Global Market Registration Authority; and H.E. Badr Al-Olama, director general at Abu Dhabi Investment Office. Their presence underscores governmental interest in the venture beyond a typical automotive launch.

Mao emphasized the Middle East’s affinity for premium SUVs, historically dominated by petrol models, and highlighted the region’s strategic geographic position for market access. However, she acknowledged challenges remain, such as infrastructure development and climate considerations, which could affect electric all-terrain vehicle adoption.

The partnership structure is notable: Jaguar Land Rover, owned by India’s Tata Motors, contributes design language and brand heritage, while Chery, one of China’s largest automotive groups, supplies advanced new energy technologies and manages global supply chain integration. Financial terms, manufacturing locations, and intellectual property arrangements between the partners have not been disclosed.

According to company statements, business leaders and investors at the Abu Dhabi Investment Forum’s Shanghai session expressed interest in the vehicle, which aims to compete in the premium electric SUV segment alongside established players like Tesla, BYD, and European manufacturers.

The five-year expansion timeline is ambitious, requiring entry into an average of 18 new markets annually and opening approximately 220 retail locations per year. This pace surpasses most recent electric vehicle launches but remains below some Chinese manufacturers’ aggressive international growth targets.

Choosing Abu Dhabi as the launch city, rather than traditional automotive hubs such as London or Shanghai, reflects shifting growth prospects for premium vehicles. The GCC’s historical embrace of large SUVs and luxury segments positions it as a promising market for electric variants, though this remains to be proven.

Reviving the Freelander name leverages brand recognition from its original 1997–2014 production run. However, industry experience shows mixed outcomes for resurrected nameplates, depending on consumer perception and clarity regarding brand ownership.

Jaguar Land Rover’s involvement aligns with its broader electrification strategy, which includes transitioning Jaguar to an electric-only brand and gradually electrifying Range Rover and Defender lines. The Freelander collaboration operates outside JLR’s core portfolio, indicating a strategic choice to extend design capabilities through partnerships.

Chery’s participation supports its ambitions to move upmarket and expand internationally. Historically focused on volume and emerging markets, the partnership with JLR offers accelerated access to premium customers and global markets.

No detailed specifications, pricing, or exact launch dates have been released. The Abu Dhabi debut is planned for later in 2024, though the precise month remains unconfirmed. Key vehicle details such as battery capacity, range, and performance metrics have yet to be disclosed.

The decision to unveil the Freelander at an investment forum rather than a traditional motor show highlights the importance of securing capital and political backing alongside consumer interest at this early stage.

By the time of the Abu Dhabi launch, the regional electric vehicle landscape may evolve, with several manufacturers announcing Middle East expansion plans for 2026. Infrastructure development continues, but charging networks lag behind those in Europe and China. Additionally, the region’s high summer temperatures pose challenges for battery thermal management.

The Peninsula Shanghai event on June 11 marked the official starting point for the revived Freelander’s global ambitions. Its success will depend on effective execution, market reception, and whether the fusion of British heritage and Chinese technology can deliver the premium all-terrain credentials promised by FREELANDER International’s leadership.
