Grassroots soccer in Jiangsu province has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity, with the Jiangsu Football City League (JSCL), also called the Su Super League or "Su Chao," becoming a major sporting and cultural phenomenon across East China. What began as a small-scale amateur competition has grown into a league that fills stadiums and generates millions of views on social media platforms such as Weibo and Douyin.
The league’s success is largely attributed to broad public participation, both on and off the field. According to Wang Xiaowan, Vice-President of the Jiangsu Football Association, over 60 percent of the players are amateurs drawn from everyday professions including students, delivery workers, and teachers, who compete on weekends before returning to their regular jobs.
The Su Super League features 13 teams representing cities throughout Jiangsu province, located in the economically vibrant Yangtze River Delta region adjacent to Shanghai. This regional identity has been a key factor in the league’s appeal, with tourism departments and local creators promoting the competition through short videos, animation, and AI-generated content that weave together local dialects, culinary traditions, and cultural heritage.
The league has embraced an open approach to user-generated content (UGC) and AI-generated content (AIGC), encouraging fans to produce memes, remixes, and commentary that circulate widely online. Media reports highlight how humor and city-based narratives have played a central role in driving public engagement.
Live entertainment elements, such as halftime dinosaur performances, further enhance the stadium experience and contribute to viral social media buzz, attracting more spectators and expanding the league’s fan base.
As the Su Super League’s influence extends beyond Jiangsu province, it is rapidly building brand value and commercial potential. However, its intellectual property framework has struggled to keep pace with this growth.
In response to the influx of businesses seeking to capitalize on the league’s popularity, the Jiangsu Football Association initiated a strategic trademark filing campaign. In May 2025, it submitted 20 trademark applications covering key categories including the league’s name, event identifiers, and mascot. A second wave of applications followed in June, aimed at protecting derivative products.
According to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) trademark database, the Jiangsu Football Association filed for trademarks such as "江苏省城市足球联赛 JIANGSU FOOTBALL CITY LEAGUE" and "JSCL" starting in May 2025. Additional related trademark applications remain pending.
Meanwhile, over 300 trademark applications referencing "Su Super League" have been filed by various entities, reflecting widespread commercial interest and the proliferation of merchandise and cultural products linked to the league.
One notable example is the "Purple Dream of Football," a product launched in Wuxi that combines traditional Yixing purple clay craftsmanship with soccer imagery in the form of a purple clay trophy symbolizing the pursuit of dreams. This design patent was granted by CNIPA within five working days, supported by the Yixing Intellectual Property Rapid Protection Center.
The rapid development of the Su Super League underscores the importance of robust intellectual property strategies in nurturing grassroots sports initiatives that evolve into influential cultural and commercial enterprises. As the league continues to grow, effective IP protection will be essential to safeguarding its brand identity and supporting sustainable expansion.
