Jio Sets New Benchmark in India’s Patent Filings with Over 3,400 Applications in FY26

Jio Platforms and its subsidiaries have emerged as a dominant force in India’s intellectual property landscape, filing approximately 3,476 patent applications during the financial year 2025-26. This figure, disclosed in Reliance Industries Limited’s Integrated Annual Report for FY26, averages nearly 10 patent filings per day and marks a significant acceleration compared to 1,654 filings in FY25 and 1,255 in FY24.

As of March 31, 2026, the cumulative patent applications filed by Jio Platforms and its subsidiaries reached 6,817 globally. Of these, 2,393 were filed within India, while 4,424 were lodged in international jurisdictions. The company reported that 1,009 patents have been granted worldwide, including 538 in India and 471 overseas.

The expansive patent portfolio covers a broad spectrum of cutting-edge technologies. Key areas include 5G and 6G communications, artificial intelligence (AI), large language models, deep learning, Internet of Things (IoT), Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) systems, and big data platforms. Notably, the filings also encompass Jio’s proprietary 5G technology stack and innovative products such as multi-user Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and AI-driven solutions like JioBrain.

This surge in patent activity aligns with increased research and development (R&D) investments across the Reliance Group. In FY26, total R&D expenditure reached ₹4,682 crore, comprising ₹3,317 crore in capital expenditure and ₹1,365 crore in revenue expenditure. This represents a nearly 12% increase over FY25 and a growth exceeding 28% over the past two financial years.

Reliance’s innovation efforts extend beyond digital services and telecommunications. The company is also advancing technologies in circular economy solutions, bio-innovations, green hydrogen, climate technologies, responsible chemistry, and industrial indigenisation. Its Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) business has filed 2,527 patent applications across more than 55 countries, with 1,177 patents granted to date.

The company employs over 1,000 scientists, engineers, and specialists dedicated to in-house R&D programs. Reliance has also implemented a structured intellectual property governance framework to effectively manage and strengthen its growing patent portfolio.

This robust increase in patent filings reflects Reliance’s strategic ambition to position itself as a technology creator rather than merely a technology adopter. The company is focusing on deep-tech capabilities, advanced manufacturing, and home-grown digital infrastructure as foundational elements of its long-term growth strategy.

Industry analysts recognize Jio’s patent activity as placing it among India’s leading corporate innovators, particularly in strategic sectors such as telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and next-generation digital infrastructure.

The company’s commitment to innovation and intellectual property development signals a transformative phase in India’s technology ecosystem, with Jio Platforms at the forefront of this evolution.
