Khon Kaen University (KKU) has embarked on a transformative Research Transformation strategy to reposition its academic research framework from a supply-side, researcher-driven model to a demand-driven approach that addresses user needs and pressing national challenges. This strategic pivot is aimed at cultivating a robust innovation ecosystem capable of translating research outputs into sustainable commercial products and solutions.
Associate Professor Pensri Jaroenwanit, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Affairs and Innovation Commercialization at KKU, emphasized that innovation commercialization involves leveraging new or adapted creations to generate tangible benefits through market trade. Currently, KKU holds nearly 2,000 registered intellectual property (IP) items. The university’s challenge is to harness these assets effectively to produce both monetary and non-monetary value, thereby establishing a sustainable revolving budget to support ongoing innovation.
To systematically facilitate the transition from research to commercial business, KKU has instituted four primary operational mechanisms:
1. Product, Research, and Intellectual Property Management: KKU compiles and manages its products, research outputs, and IP assets to strategically drive market placement and attract investment. This includes the development of a “Sales Sheet Catalogue” and hosting the “KKU Enterprise Demo Day,” which provides researchers with direct pitching opportunities to investors and entrepreneurs.
2. Integrated Marketing Management: The university launched the “KKU Market” platform, its first e-commerce channel dedicated to marketing research-derived products from KKU and its business partners. This platform also manages institutional communications and branding efforts.
3. Investment Management and Private Joint Ventures: KKU offers critical insights to guide strategic investment decisions, facilitating connections with both domestic and international investors. The university promotes diverse joint-venture models with the private sector to maximize commercial potential.
4. Partnership Network Building: The university actively cultivates collaborative networks with businesses, entrepreneurs, government agencies, and other higher education institutions to unlock sustainable co-business opportunities.
A significant milestone under this strategy is the launch of the “KKU Intellectual Property-Based Startup Incubation Programme.” This initiative bridges student affairs with innovation commercialization by nurturing entrepreneurial skills among students through collaboration with the KKU Startup Club. The program leverages the university’s IP assets as foundations for new business ventures.
Associate Professor Jaroenwanit highlighted that the commercialization drive transcends mere asset management for revenue generation. It is integral to developing “next-generation graduates” aligned with KKU’s EGGS Identity framework, particularly emphasizing the Entrepreneurial (E) dimension. This focus cultivates an entrepreneurial mindset that identifies opportunities and drives business creation.
By unlocking its repository of nearly 2,000 intellectual property items through these strategic mechanisms and programs, Khon Kaen University positions itself as a global leader in societal advancement through innovation. This approach supports national economic growth grounded in knowledge-based development, fully aligned with the university’s institutional transformation goals.
