Kigali to Host 5th Annual Africa Intellectual Property Summit Focusing on IP’s Role in Sustainable Development

The 5th Annual Africa Intellectual Property Rights Summit (Africa IP Summit) is scheduled for November 28-30, 2024, at the M Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. This year’s summit will convene under the theme: "Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs): The Catalyst for Sustainable Development Goals in Africa."

Organized by the African Intellectual Property Centre (Africa IP Centre), a subsidiary of the International Trade and Research Centre (ITRC), the summit aims to highlight the critical role of intellectual property (IP) in fostering innovation and economic growth across the continent. It recognizes the importance of protecting and leveraging IP rights to promote inclusive integration and socioeconomic development in Africa.

The event will bring together stakeholders from various sectors and backgrounds to discuss strategies for overcoming challenges within Africa’s IP rights ecosystem. Attendees will explore actionable solutions to ensure that IP systems effectively serve African interests and contribute to the continent’s development goals.

Key topics on the agenda include IP protection and enforcement, technology transfer, innovation ecosystems, legal and regulatory frameworks, and the role of IP in driving inclusive economic development. The summit will provide a platform for thought-provoking discussions, strategic collaborations, and practical solutions to enhance Africa’s IP landscape.

Sand Mba-Kalu, Chair of the 5th Africa IP Summit Organising Committee, emphasized the summit’s dynamic format: "The Summit will offer a diverse range of sessions, from presentations to panel discussions and a pitchathon for innovative ideas and projects to networking sessions. This is an excellent opportunity to interact with industry experts, exchange best practices, and discover innovative approaches to tackle crucial intellectual property issues facing the continent."

Mr. Mba-Kalu further described the summit as more than a conference, calling it "an inclusive and dynamic platform that aims to shape the future of intellectual property in Africa. Together, we can unlock new opportunities for innovation, prosperity, and sustainable development on the continent. We invite everyone to join us on this important journey as we collaborate to build a brighter and more prosperous future for Africa."

Since its inception in 2019, the Africa IP Centre has focused on strengthening institutional capacity among African IP stakeholders and advocating for sound IP policies that benefit Africans and the continent as a whole. The Centre has hosted dialogues and annual summits to foster discussion on improving Africa’s IP systems.

Previous summits have attracted over 1,000 participants from across Africa and beyond, including representatives from Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, France, the United States, Namibia, the United Arab Emirates, Zambia, Gambia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Russia, Tunisia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Togo, Norway, Benin, and Lesotho.

The 2024 summit aims to raise awareness about the role of IP in innovation and economic development, foster dialogue on IP protection, enforcement, and commercialization challenges, and promote collaboration among policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and practitioners.

Additionally, the summit will contribute to ongoing negotiations related to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement’s (AfCFTA) Protocol on IP Rights. It will also encourage dialogue on harmonizing operations among Africa’s existing IP regimes, including the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), and the Pan African Intellectual Property Organization (PAIPO).

Sub-themes for the summit include fostering industry, innovation, and infrastructure through patent protection aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9; promoting economic growth and decent work via trademark protection; exploring how IP can work better for Africa to drive change (SDGs 1, 2, 3, and 6); protecting geographical indications to enhance traditional products’ economic viability; supporting industrial design protection to encourage creativity and innovation; advocating inclusive IP policies for a diverse innovation ecosystem; and examining copyright’s role in digital innovation and technological advancement.

Following the summit, the UN Global Compact will convene Africa’s private sector on December 3 to discuss strategies for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, further reinforcing the continent’s commitment to leveraging IP for sustainable progress.
