Intellectual property services in Kuwait have experienced notable expansion, driven by increased activity across trademarks, patents, and industrial designs, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Acting Undersecretary Marwa Al-Jaidan attributed this growth to concerted efforts aimed at strengthening the protection of commercial and industrial rights, fostering a supportive business environment, and advancing the country’s shift toward a knowledge-based economy.
In a statement provided to Kuwait News Agency on Monday, Al-Jaidan revealed that the Trademarks and Patents Department processed 68,632 transactions in 2025, generating fees totaling approximately KD 6.69 million (around $21.7 million).
She linked the rise in activity to measures implemented to enhance transparency and integrate regulatory systems, which have been instrumental in curbing sector misuse, including money laundering and terrorism financing.
The ministry is pursuing an integrated strategy encompassing procedural updates, departmental linkage, and the application of international standards for auditing and follow-up. These efforts aim to ensure rigorous oversight of intellectual property operations and related financial activities.
The Trademarks Department accounted for the majority of transactions, with 62,942 recorded and fees amounting to about KD 6.07 million ($19.7 million). This volume included 13,350 trademark registration applications, 11,644 publication transactions, and 10,518 registrations and certificate issuances.
Renewal applications for trademarks in their final year of protection reached 6,468, complemented by 7,103 renewal publications. Additionally, ownership transfer applications totaled 1,406, indicating sustained dynamism within the local trademark market.
The Patents Department managed 4,798 transactions, generating approximately KD 615,800 ($2 million) in fees. These encompassed 643 patent applications from companies, 70 from individuals, and 97 examination and publication transactions for companies. Patent renewals across various protection periods constituted the largest segment of its workload.
Meanwhile, the Industrial Designs Department recorded 892 transactions, yielding around KD 6,484 ($21,000). This included 507 filings, 255 examination and publication transactions, and 37 renewal applications.
Al-Jaidan emphasized that these figures demonstrate the tangible impact of regulatory policies and the ministry’s commitment to compliance. Awareness and inspection campaigns have further contributed to protecting the economy and bolstering investor confidence.
The Trademarks and Patents Department plays a pivotal role in the ministry’s mandate to safeguard intellectual property rights and enforce relevant laws, thereby promoting fair competition and attracting investment.
In Kuwait, intellectual property is divided between literary works—such as books, films, and music—under the Ministry of Information, and industrial property—including patents, designs, and trademarks—under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The department’s responsibilities include registering, renewing, and amending trademarks; reviewing objections; rejecting similar applications; documenting and publishing patents and industrial designs; and collaborating with other authorities to implement the GCC patent system.
