The Regional Intellectual Property (IP) Club Competition took place in Harare, Zimbabwe, with the objective of promoting intellectual property awareness among secondary school students across Africa. This event encouraged innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship by providing a platform for young people to demonstrate their knowledge of intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs.

Participants engaged in various academic activities such as presentations, quizzes, and debates designed to test both theoretical understanding and practical application of IP concepts. The competition is part of a broader initiative by intellectual property institutions and partners throughout Africa to integrate IP education into school curricula, fostering a new generation of innovators equipped to develop creative solutions to societal challenges.

Representing Liberia, the students from the Intellectual Property Club of Maretha International Preparatory High School distinguished themselves by winning the championship title at the regional event. Upon their return, they were formally received and recognized by President Joseph Boakai for their outstanding achievement.

During the recognition ceremony, President Boakai lauded the students for their remarkable success and for serving as ambassadors of Liberia on the international stage. He emphasized that their victory reflects the abundant talent, creativity, and innovative potential present among Liberian youth.

The President further noted that this accomplishment aligns closely with his Administration’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, particularly its focus on education, youth empowerment, innovation, and human capacity development. He urged young Liberians to pursue excellence in science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, underscoring that the nation’s future depends on the youth’s ability to generate solutions that drive national growth.

Honorable Garmia Koboi, Director General of the Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO), which facilitated the students’ participation in the competition, expressed gratitude to President Boakai for acknowledging the champions. She reaffirmed LIPO’s commitment to advancing intellectual property education throughout Liberia.

Director Koboi highlighted that the students’ victory demonstrates the critical importance of investing in IP awareness and innovation among young people. She added that such initiatives are vital to preparing students to compete and succeed in an increasingly knowledge-driven global economy.

The Regional Intellectual Property Club Competition exemplifies ongoing efforts across Africa to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship at the secondary school level. By equipping students with a solid understanding of intellectual property rights and their role in economic development, the competition fosters a culture of creativity and protection of innovative ideas.

Liberia’s success at this regional event not only elevates the country’s profile in intellectual property education but also serves as a catalyst for further investment in youth-focused innovation programs. The collaboration between educational institutions and IP offices remains essential to sustaining this momentum.

President Boakai’s recognition of the students underscores the government’s dedication to empowering the next generation of innovators. It also reinforces the strategic importance of intellectual property as a driver of economic growth and development in Liberia and across Africa.

The Liberia Intellectual Property Office continues to play a pivotal role in promoting IP education and awareness, ensuring that young Liberians are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a competitive global landscape.

This milestone achievement by the Maretha International Preparatory High School students marks a significant step forward in Liberia’s journey toward fostering a vibrant, innovation-driven economy supported by robust intellectual property frameworks.
