Maryland Jockey Club Affirms Operational Control Amid Preakness Stakes IP Transfer to Churchill Downs

LAUREL, MD — The Maryland Jockey Club (TMJC), working alongside the Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) and the Maryland Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO), is spearheading a comprehensive transformation of Pimlico Race Course, the historic home of the Preakness Stakes. This initiative aims to establish Pimlico as a year-round racing facility while designating Laurel Park as the primary training center. These multi-year investments are designed to secure the long-term economic vitality and stability of Maryland horse racing.

Recently, the State of Maryland received notification from 1/ST Maryland LLC, an affiliate of The Stronach Group, regarding a tentative agreement to transfer the intellectual property (IP) rights associated with the Preakness Stakes to Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI). This development pertains specifically to the ownership of the Preakness Stakes’ IP assets.

Despite this intended transfer, TMJC emphasizes that its rights to full operational control and responsibility for both the Preakness Stakes and the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes remain unaffected. Both events will continue to be hosted at Pimlico Race Course starting in 2027.

Furthermore, TMJC maintains exclusive control over the media rights and licensing related to the Preakness Stakes, as stipulated in the Master Agreement executed between the State of Maryland and 1/ST Maryland LLC on June 28, 2024. The potential transaction involving Churchill Downs does not alter these rights.

In addition to event management, TMJC oversees the racing calendar and daily operations at both Laurel Park and the soon-to-be-rebuilt Pimlico Race Course, ensuring continuity and stability in Maryland’s racing schedule.

TMJC also offers premium race-day experiences, including reserved seating at Dining Box tables with panoramic views of the track. The race-day menu features a curated selection of starters, salads, entrees with paired sides, and desserts designed to enhance the spectator experience.

For larger group reservations of ten or more guests, TMJC invites inquiries through its Group Sales Department at 301-470-5416 or via email at Events@marylandjockeyclub.com.

This statement from TMJC clarifies the operational and licensing landscape amid the evolving ownership of Preakness Stakes intellectual property, underscoring the Club’s ongoing commitment to Maryland racing’s heritage and future.
