Netflix Secures First-Look Rights to Dark Horse Entertainment’s Film and TV IP Portfolio

Netflix has finalized a first-look agreement with Dark Horse Entertainment, the company behind the acclaimed series “The Umbrella Academy,” which Netflix recently renewed for a second season. This deal grants Netflix priority access to Dark Horse’s intellectual property (IP) for both film and television projects, enabling the streaming giant to explore new content opportunities with the comic book publisher.

Dark Horse Entertainment and Netflix have an established working relationship, having previously collaborated on the feature film “Polar,” directed by Jonas Åkerlund and starring Mads Mikkelsen. The new agreement formalizes and expands this partnership, allowing Netflix to review Dark Horse’s IP slate before other potential buyers.

Mike Richardson, founder and president of Dark Horse, emphasized the strength of the creative partnership, stating, “We have strong creative relationships as well as a large content library to work with and, as we have seen with our recent projects, Netflix is the perfect partner to bring our stories to fans around the world.”

Keith Goldberg, Senior Vice President at Dark Horse, highlighted Netflix’s role in amplifying the company’s global reach, noting that the platform has enabled Dark Horse’s content to “spread in a way that we’ve never experienced before.”

This strategic alliance comes at a pivotal time for Netflix as it seeks to fill the void left by Disney’s withdrawal of original movies and future Marvel and Lucasfilm content from the platform. Since acquiring Millarworld in 2017—a comic book publisher founded by Mark Millar, known for titles such as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan—Netflix has been actively building its own superhero and genre content pipeline.

Cindy Holland, Netflix’s Vice President of Original Content, commented on the collaboration: “The Netflix teams are already working in deep collaboration with Dark Horse to identify projects beyond the world of traditional superheroes—branching into horror, fantasy and family entertainment—that we think our members will love.”

The first-look deal with Dark Horse complements Netflix’s broader content expansion strategy, which includes recent acquisitions such as the StoryBots children’s media brand and regional partnerships like the one with OSN in the Middle East and North Africa.

As Netflix continues to diversify its intellectual property portfolio, the partnership with Dark Horse positions the streamer to develop a wide range of genre projects, leveraging Dark Horse’s extensive and varied content library to attract global audiences.

This deal underscores Netflix’s commitment to securing premium IP and fostering creative collaborations that extend beyond traditional superhero narratives, reflecting the evolving demands of its subscriber base worldwide.
