The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) of Qatar, in partnership with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Intellectual Property Training Center, organized an advanced Patent Examination Training Program held on June 9 and 10, 2026. The programme was attended by several patent examiners from MoCI’s Intellectual Property Rights Protection Department.
The primary objective of the training was to develop the participants’ technical and legal competencies in patent examination. This was achieved through a comprehensive review of the latest international practices and an exchange of expertise focused on examination procedures and the evaluation of patent applications in line with approved global standards.
Key topics addressed during the sessions included substantive patent examination, which involves assessing the novelty and inventive step of patent applications. Participants also engaged in detailed discussions on patent classification systems, essential for organizing patent information effectively.
The training further covered international intellectual property agreements and treaties, providing examiners with a broader understanding of the global IP landscape and its implications for national patent examination processes.
A significant component of the programme was dedicated to the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in patent examination and prior-art searches. This segment highlighted how AI tools can enhance the efficiency and accuracy of patent assessments.
Additionally, the training introduced the electronic systems and digital tools utilized in the examination and management of patent applications, equipping examiners with practical knowledge of modern IP administration technologies.
This initiative is part of MoCI’s ongoing efforts to build national competencies and reinforce Qatar’s intellectual property and innovation ecosystem. By investing in advanced training for patent examiners, the Ministry aims to ensure high-quality patent examination services that align with international best practices.
The programme underscores Qatar’s commitment to fostering a robust IP environment that supports innovation, protects inventors’ rights, and facilitates economic growth through effective intellectual property management.
