The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Qatar hosted a special event to commemorate World Intellectual Property Day, centering this year’s activities on the theme, “Intellectual Property and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate.” The celebration took place at the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum in Doha, with the primary aim of raising awareness about the significance of intellectual property (IP) in the advancement of the sports sector and fostering a legal environment conducive to innovation and investment.
In his opening remarks, H E Saleh Abdullah Al Manna, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, addressed the evolving landscape of the sports ecosystem. Al Manna emphasized that modern sports extend beyond competition, now relying on an integrated framework for IP protection. He highlighted that investments in advanced sports technologies demonstrate a tangible integration between scientific research and practical application. Al Manna reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to developing legislation and providing technical support to innovators, aligning these efforts with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), contributed to the event through a recorded address. Tang discussed the often unseen dimension of the sports world, explaining that patents and design rights are essential for protecting both technical and aesthetic innovations in stadiums. He further noted that copyright ensures the delivery of content to billions of fans worldwide, underscoring the need for robust management of these intellectual assets.
Dr. Jenan Kabbara, Regional Counselor for Intellectual Property in the French Republic, also addressed the gathering via a recorded message. Dr. Kabbara highlighted that various forms of IP rights, including trademarks and industrial design, empower creators to transform ideas into tangible realities, thereby sustaining the global development of the sports sector.
The event featured a performance by Al Wakrah Sports Club and showcased a range of innovations, including Qatar’s proprietary “stadium cooling technology.” This technology was presented as a leading example of protected innovation within the sports industry, underscoring the country’s commitment to fostering homegrown advancements.
A panel discussion brought together a group of specialists to examine the complex legal challenges arising from digital transformation in sports. The panel addressed issues such as the management of exclusive broadcasting rights, trademark protection during major tournaments, and the harmonization of local legislation with international standards. The discussion also focused on efforts to combat piracy and safeguard the rights of partners and investors in the sports sector.
Throughout the event, officials and experts reiterated the importance of intellectual property in driving both economic and technological progress within the sports industry. The Ministry’s ongoing efforts to create a robust legal and regulatory environment were highlighted as essential to encouraging innovation and investment in sports-related technologies.
The celebration concluded with a reaffirmation of Qatar’s commitment to supporting the nation’s strategic vision for sustainable development through the protection and promotion of intellectual property rights, particularly as they relate to the rapidly evolving sports sector.
