Saudi Arabia Reports 13% Surge in Patent Filings, Reaching 8,029 in 2024

Saudi Arabia’s intellectual property sector experienced robust growth in 2024, with patent filings increasing by 13.33 percent year on year to reach a record total of 8,029, according to the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP).

The authority’s latest annual statistical report reveals substantial expansion across all major IP categories, underscoring the Kingdom’s ongoing transformation into a knowledge-driven economy. Notably, patent applications from individual inventors surged by 62 percent, while filings from foreign applicants rose 15 percent, totaling 4,921. This trend indicates growing global interest in securing intellectual property rights within Saudi Arabia.

Trademark registrations also saw a significant rise, totaling 31,834 in 2024, marking a 15.72 percent increase compared to the previous year. Design filings grew by 8.75 percent, and voluntary copyright registrations jumped by 63.15 percent, signaling heightened public engagement with IP rights.

Throughout the year, SAIP issued 4,355 patent certificates, 1,578 design registrations, and 1,504 copyright certificates, reflecting active enforcement and recognition of intellectual property protections.

The report highlights that 96 percent of granted patents originated from institutions such as universities and research centers, emphasizing their pivotal role in the Kingdom’s innovation ecosystem. Meanwhile, individual inventors contributed 2,139 patent applications, up from 1,320 in 2023, demonstrating increased grassroots participation in innovation.

In terms of technical fields, information technology and software accounted for 25.77 percent of total patent filings. Library and document management technologies represented 57.16 percent, while applied technical inventions comprised 12.46 percent.

Public awareness of intellectual property rights also improved, with SAIP reporting an 8 percent increase in the national IP awareness index. This progress is attributed to expanded electronic services, streamlined application procedures, and national initiatives aimed at protecting innovators’ rights.

On the international stage, Saudi Arabia’s IP advancements have been recognized with a 17.5 percent improvement in its score on the 2025 Global Intellectual Property Index. The Kingdom ranked among the top-performing countries out of 55 economies evaluated.

Saudi Arabia also secured the 24th position globally in artificial intelligence patent output, filing 1,189 AI-related patents. This achievement underscores the country’s commitment to technological advancement and innovation-led economic growth.

These accomplishments are the result of comprehensive reforms to Saudi Arabia’s intellectual property framework, including enhanced legal protections and enforcement strategies designed to foster a more competitive and innovation-driven economy.

The sustained growth across patents, trademarks, designs, and copyrights reflects the Kingdom’s strategic focus on nurturing innovation and securing intellectual property rights as foundational pillars of its economic diversification and knowledge economy ambitions.
