Shoolini University Surpasses 2,000 Intellectual Property Filings, Aiming for 10,000 Patents

Shoolini University in Himachal Pradesh has crossed the milestone of 2,000 intellectual property (IP) applications, underscoring its growing emphasis on research, innovation, and technology development. This achievement was detailed in the university’s annual patent report presented by Dinesh Kumar, Director of the Shoolini Intellectual Property Rights Office (SIPRO).

According to the report, the university has filed a total of 2,000 IP assets to date. These include 1,224 utility patents, 512 design applications, 247 copyrights, and 17 trademarks. Of these filings, 989 patents have been published, and 656 intellectual properties have been granted or registered.

The year 2025 saw continued strong innovation activity at Shoolini University. During this period, the institution filed 182 patent applications, 37 design applications, and 51 copyright applications. Additionally, 180 patents were published, and eight patents were granted within the year.

The university also recognized its leading innovators for 2025. Dr. Raj Kumar Saini from the School of Engineering and Technology emerged as the top patent filer with 17 applications. He was followed by Professor Somesh Sharma, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, who filed 15 patents. Professors Pankaj Raizada of the School of Advanced Chemical Sciences and Deepak Kumar, Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, each filed 12 patents.

Among the academic departments, the School of Agriculture led with 29 patent applications, followed by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences with 23, and the School of Engineering and Technology with 21. The SIPRO IPR Lab at the Shoolini Institute of Life Sciences and Business Management (SILB) was specially acknowledged for filing 10 patent applications in less than a year.

A focal point of the event was the launch of the university’s “One Student, One Patent” campaign. This initiative encourages students to develop innovative ideas with commercial and societal impact.

Chancellor Professor P.K. Khosla reaffirmed the university’s commitment to this campaign, urging both students and faculty to address real-world challenges through innovation. “Innovation should become an integral part of every student’s academic journey,” he stated.

Pro Chancellor Vishal Anand encouraged students and researchers to pursue their ideas confidently and transform them into practical solutions. Vice-Chancellor Professor Atul Khosla praised the innovators’ efforts and set an ambitious goal of achieving 10,000 patents in the coming years.

Registrar Dr. Sunil Puri noted that the vision adopted by the university years ago has now become one of its defining strengths.

Looking ahead, Himanshu Sharma, Senior Manager at SIPRO, outlined future plans. The office aims to file 300 utility patents in 2026 and exceed 3,000 cumulative IP applications by next year. The targets also include at least 300 published patents and 25 granted patents annually.

Sharma encouraged researchers to file Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications to boost the university’s international presence and improve rankings in global frameworks such as QS and Times Higher Education.

The university’s recent collaborations and initiatives further demonstrate its commitment to innovation. These include partnerships with Antier Solutions for AI, large language models, and blockchain innovation, as well as academic collaborations with Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Medical University.

Shoolini University’s sustained focus on intellectual property development and student engagement positions it as a growing hub for research and innovation in India.
