Slate Auto Secures Indian Design Patents for Squareback SUV and Pickup Models

American electric vehicle startup Slate Auto has recently secured design patents in India for two vehicle models: an SUV called the Squareback and a pickup truck. This marks the company’s continued effort to protect its intellectual property internationally, following earlier patents for other vehicle designs.

The Squareback is a boxy SUV distinguished by its modular design, which allows it to transform similarly to the Chery T1TP modular concept. Depending on the configuration of its panniers—removable side compartments—the vehicle can switch between utility vehicle and SUV modes. This modularity also enables the addition of two extra airbags, enhancing passenger safety.

Slate Auto’s patent filings in India come amid a surge of boxy SUV designs patented in the country. Notable examples include the Chery Jetour T2, Jaecoo J5 (available in petrol and electric variants), iCAUR V23, Chery X3L, Lepas L4 (petrol and EV), Lepas L6 EV, and Mahindra’s Vision S, Vision T, and Vision SXT models. This clustering of similar designs suggests a competitive and evolving market segment in India, which Slate appears poised to enter or influence.

Slate Auto’s vehicles emphasize customization, allowing buyers to tailor features to their preferences. Instead of a fixed infotainment system, Slate employs a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) approach, enabling users to integrate their personal tablets, smartphones, or other devices for media and connectivity.

All Slate vehicles are powered by a 201bhp electric motor. The company claims two range options: approximately 150 miles (241 kilometers) and 240 miles (382 kilometers) on a single charge. Additionally, Slate supports 120kW DC fast charging, compatible with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports, facilitating convenient charging for US customers.

The opening of order books for the Squareback and other body styles in the United States indicates Slate’s current focus on its home market. However, the global patent filings, including those in India, may reflect strategic positioning for future international expansion.

By patenting its innovative designs in India, Slate Auto strengthens its intellectual property portfolio in a key emerging market. This move could serve as a foundation for competitive entry into India’s growing electric vehicle sector or as a defensive measure against potential design infringements.

Slate Auto’s approach—combining modular design, customizable features, and robust IP protection—positions it as a noteworthy player in the evolving global electric vehicle landscape.
