South African Revenue Service Updates on eFiling Access, Legal Proceedings, and Tariff Amendments

On 13 July 2026, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) acknowledged that some taxpayers are experiencing intermittent access to its eFiling system and the SARS MobiApp. SARS confirmed that dedicated teams are actively working to resolve these technical difficulties to restore full service functionality.

In a separate announcement dated 10 July 2026, SARS welcomed the sentencing of Mr André Claude Dickoumba-De-Diguela, who received a 25-year direct imprisonment sentence. This sentencing marks a significant enforcement action in SARS's ongoing efforts to uphold tax compliance and integrity.

SARS also confirmed its participation in Manufacturing Indaba 2026, scheduled for 14–15 July 2026. This event is recognized as one of Africa’s leading platforms for manufacturing and industrialization, providing SARS an opportunity to engage with stakeholders and promote economic development.

The agency provided an update on the Auto Assessment process for the 2026 Filing Season in its July issue, aiming to assist taxpayers in understanding the streamlined assessment procedures.

On 10 July 2026, SARS published details of tariff amendments under the Customs and Excise Act, 1964, as outlined in Government Gazette 54974 (Notice R7690). These amendments, also referenced in a 9 July 2026 notice, reflect adjustments to customs tariffs that impact importers and exporters.

SARS reiterated its vision of becoming a smart, modern revenue service characterized by unquestionable integrity and trust. This vision remains central to its strategic initiatives and service delivery improvements.

Further technical enhancements were announced on 7 July 2026 with the release of e@syFile™ Employer version 8.0.1_338. Notably, the update includes improvements to the Bulk Payment function, facilitating more efficient employer payments.

SARS also addressed common taxpayer queries, including procedures for updating contact details such as cell phone numbers and email addresses within the eFiling security framework.

Additionally, guidance was provided for taxpayers whose employers did not issue IRP5 or IT3(a) certificates, clarifying the use of payslips and the applicable reference numbers for completing ITR12 returns.

Finally, SARS reminded stakeholders that state warehouses for the safekeeping of goods are managed by Customs, emphasizing the importance of compliance with storage and customs regulations.

These announcements collectively highlight SARS's ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, enforce compliance, and support South Africa's economic growth through transparent and reliable tax administration.
