South Korea Launches Global Trademark Authentication to Combat K-Beauty Counterfeits

The South Korean government is intensifying its efforts to protect K-beauty brands from counterfeit products through a new international trademark authentication system. Set to launch in October, this state-backed initiative will register government-certified trademarks across more than 70 countries and markets, including key regions such as Europe, China, and the ASEAN bloc.

This expanded trademark framework empowers Korean authorities to initiate investigations, conduct administrative searches, and implement customs interventions whenever counterfeit certified products are detected. The system is designed to provide a robust legal and enforcement mechanism to safeguard the integrity of Korean beauty brands on a global scale.

Complementing this trademark registration effort is the government’s deployment of artificial intelligence-powered monitoring tools targeting global e-commerce platforms. These tools have already facilitated the removal of over 36,000 counterfeit beauty products in 2025, with an additional 20,000 seized during the first half of 2026.

To bolster enforcement, South Korea has expanded formal cooperation agreements with e-commerce platforms from six to nine partners. Notable additions include TikTok Shop, Temu, and Tokopedia, reflecting a strategic focus on platforms with significant international reach.

Beyond platform cooperation, the initiative leverages overseas intellectual property centers and diplomatic channels to support cross-border enforcement actions. This multi-pronged approach aims to address the complex challenges posed by counterfeit cosmetics in global digital marketplaces.

The crackdown responds to the growing commercial significance of K-beauty brands as they expand internationally. Counterfeit cosmetics not only threaten consumer safety but also erode brand equity and undermine consumer confidence. Coordinated enforcement is therefore critical for Korean beauty companies seeking to scale their presence worldwide.

By integrating trademark authentication with AI monitoring and international collaboration, South Korea is setting a precedent for comprehensive intellectual property protection in the cosmetics sector. This approach underscores the government’s commitment to preserving the reputation and safety of its burgeoning K-beauty industry.

The initiative arrives amid broader trends in the beauty sector, including innovations in biotechnology and sustainability, which further elevate the value of authentic, high-quality products. Protecting these assets through enhanced legal frameworks is essential for maintaining competitive advantage.

As K-beauty continues to captivate consumers globally, South Korea’s strengthened enforcement measures represent a decisive step toward combating counterfeit goods and supporting the industry’s sustainable growth.
