The establishment of a Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus marks a significant step in bridging the gap between academic research and commercialisation, according to Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff, Director-General of the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).
Yusnieza highlighted that the centre will function as both an information resource hub and a vital platform supporting researchers and students in safeguarding and commercialising their intellectual property (IP).
"Through this platform, researchers and students can now conduct patent searches and in-depth patentability analysis at the early stages of their research," she explained. "This not only prevents duplication of research but also maximises the economic value of the intellectual property produced."
The TISC will grant Swinburne Sarawak’s academic community direct access to global patent databases and provide IP commercialisation advisory services, enhancing the university’s capacity to translate research into market-ready innovations.
Swinburne Sarawak officially became the 27th member of Malaysia’s national TISC network, which is coordinated by MyIPO under the framework of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). This milestone was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between MyIPO and the university.
The MoU was signed by Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff and Swinburne Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Lau Hieng Ho, during a ceremony held at the campus.
Yusnieza noted that this collaboration reflects MyIPO’s ongoing efforts to expand the national innovation support network while strengthening IP awareness and commercialisation capabilities among researchers and students.
In recent years, Swinburne Sarawak has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation. In 2025, the university ranked eighth among private universities in Malaysia for the highest number of patent filings with MyIPO. Additionally, between 2025 and 2026, it filed 38 copyright applications.
The event also featured a knowledge-sharing session titled "Unlocking Commercial Value: Integrating Patent Drafting Excellence with Broader IP Rights," delivered by Sofea Rehan Ramli, Assistant Director at MyIPO Intellectual Property Academy.
This session covered advanced patent drafting techniques and comprehensive IP protection strategies designed to assist local innovations in entering international markets and attracting high-value investments.
The launch of the TISC at Swinburne Sarawak is expected to catalyse greater innovation and commercialisation activities within the academic community, fostering a stronger ecosystem for intellectual property development in Malaysia.
By providing early-stage patent search capabilities and expert advisory services, the centre aims to reduce research duplication and enhance the economic impact of academic inventions.
As the 27th member of the national TISC network, Swinburne Sarawak joins a growing coalition of institutions dedicated to supporting innovation and intellectual property commercialisation across Malaysia.
This initiative aligns with global best practices under the auspices of WIPO, reinforcing Malaysia’s commitment to nurturing a knowledge-based economy through effective IP management and commercialisation.
The collaboration between MyIPO and Swinburne Sarawak underscores the strategic importance of integrating academic research with market-driven IP strategies to maximise the value of innovations.
