Thailand has officially nominated Pimchanok Pitfield, a seasoned trade diplomat and current ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, for two senior executive positions at WIPO. The Cabinet approved the nomination on May 19, following a proposal from the Ministry of Commerce.
Pimchanok is being put forward as a candidate for the roles of Deputy Director General (DDG) and Assistant Director General (ADG) at WIPO, a specialized United Nations agency responsible for intellectual property protection worldwide. If appointed, she would become the first Thai national to hold such a senior executive position within the organization.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with preparing and submitting Thailand’s official Letter of Nomination to WIPO through the appropriate channels, as stipulated by the Cabinet resolution. This formal nomination underscores Thailand’s confidence in its ability to contribute strategically to global intellectual property policy and governance.
Pimchanok Pitfield’s career spans extensive experience in international trade negotiations under the Ministry of Commerce. She has previously served as Minister (Commercial) in Brussels and as director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), where she played a key role in shaping Thailand’s trade policies.
Since February 8, 2021, she has represented Thailand as ambassador and permanent representative to the WTO and WIPO in Geneva, engaging in negotiations on trade and intellectual property matters.
Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts in English with first-class honours from Chulalongkorn University, a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy, and a PhD in International Relations from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States.
The nomination process was coordinated by Auramon Supthaweethum, director-general of the Department of Intellectual Property, in collaboration with Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Commerce.
Auramon indicated that the selection results are expected within four months, ahead of the new term commencing on October 1. She emphasized that Thailand possesses capable personnel with strong expertise in intellectual property and is prepared to assume key roles in international organizations.
Should Pimchanok be selected, her appointment would enhance Thailand’s international profile and amplify its voice in shaping global IP policy and standards. Auramon highlighted that such a role would support policies benefiting entrepreneurs, leverage intellectual property to drive the creative economy, and promote national innovation.
Following the Cabinet’s endorsement, Thailand will submit Pimchanok’s nomination documents, including her profile and qualifications, to WIPO headquarters in Geneva. WIPO will then conduct its recruitment and selection process.
According to WIPO procedures, Deputy and Assistant Director General appointments report directly to the Director General. DDG appointments require approval by the WIPO Coordination Committee after the Director General’s selection.
Candidates are expected to maintain their current official duties during the selection process, including their roles as permanent representatives.
Thailand has been a member of WIPO since 1989, with the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce serving as the national IP office. This nomination reflects Thailand’s ongoing commitment to active participation in international intellectual property affairs.
