Thailand’s Intellectual Property Department Leverages Tech and Raids to Combat Online Counterfeiting Surge

Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has escalated its crackdown on online counterfeit goods by combining cutting-edge technology with targeted physical enforcement operations. This initiative aims to protect consumer trust and intellectual property rights amid a rapidly expanding e-commerce market.

Between January and May 2026, the DIP employed digital intelligence to trace online vendors of counterfeit products back to their physical distribution centers. This strategy culminated in a series of warehouse raids resulting in 116 arrests and the seizure of 224,042 counterfeit items. Authorities estimate these actions prevented economic losses exceeding 81.7 million baht for registered rights holders.

The enforcement surge coincides with Thailand’s booming digital trade landscape. Official data reveals that the country’s business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce market reached 970 billion baht in 2025 and is projected to nearly double to 1.8 trillion baht by 2030. However, this growth has also modernized counterfeit networks, enabling rapid distribution of trademark-infringing goods.

Auramon Supthaweethum, Director-General of the DIP, emphasized the critical role of social media in contemporary commerce. She noted, “Social media has become an essential tool for modern business. The growth of e-commerce has led to increasingly sophisticated and diverse forms of online infringement.”

In response, the DIP shifted from reactive monitoring to proactive, systemic intervention. During the first five months of 2026, the department successfully enforced the removal of 1,322 illicit online listings through digital "Notice and Takedown" procedures.

Crucially, the DIP’s approach integrates digital intelligence with physical enforcement. By tracking counterfeit vendors from online platforms to their storage facilities, authorities effectively disrupted supply chains at their source.

To further enhance enforcement capabilities, the DIP has partnered with Meta Thailand. On a recent Monday, the department concluded a practical workshop designed to train over 50 corporate entities and rights holders on Meta’s proprietary Brand Rights Protection infrastructure.

Led by Facebook Thailand’s public policy manager, Ing Sirikulbodee, and Meta’s Asia-Pacific IP legal counsel, Just Wang, the initiative equips local businesses with automated tracking and machine-learning tools. These technologies enable brands to monitor, detect, and instantly flag copyright and trademark violations across Facebook’s ecosystem before counterfeit goods reach consumers.

This collaboration underscores the DIP’s commitment to leveraging private sector technology to combat intellectual property violations in the digital age. By empowering rights holders with advanced tools and coupling this with decisive enforcement actions, Thailand aims to safeguard its growing e-commerce market and maintain consumer confidence.

The department’s integrated strategy reflects a broader recognition that online intellectual property enforcement is a critical economic priority as consumer buying habits evolve and digital trade expands.

As Thailand’s e-commerce sector continues its upward trajectory, the DIP’s combined use of technology and traditional enforcement is positioned to serve as a model for addressing the complex challenges of online counterfeiting in Southeast Asia and beyond.
