UK Intellectual Property Office Announces Key Enhancements to Patents Service Through 2026

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) has announced a series of significant updates and improvements to its patents service, with a roadmap extending over the next 12 months and expected completion in summer or autumn 2026. These enhancements are designed to streamline the patent application process, improve user account management, and automate communications.

One of the primary improvements focuses on patent application submissions. Applicants will benefit from a more straightforward method to select the correct representative for their account. On the 'Assign representation' screen, users linked to an organisation will now see three options: the organisation their account is linked to, the applicant themselves, or a different attorney or individual. This update reduces the need to search for a representative unless they differ from the user or organisation. However, this change has not yet been applied to national phase applications.

Additionally, upon submitting a patent application, applicants will receive an immediate 'submission receipt.' This receipt will provide comprehensive information, including all details found in the official filing receipt and any accompanying documents, enhancing transparency and record-keeping.

The 'check your answers' page has also been improved to include fee details and prompts for further verification, helping applicants ensure accuracy before final submission.

Responding to examination reports will become more flexible with the introduction of an additional documents upload option. Applicants can now submit response letters in PDF format and include their own reference to the response, facilitating clearer communication with examiners.

Account sign-up processes are being refined to better link user accounts with their patents, simplifying account management and access.

For national phase applications, the UK IPO has automated email notifications wherever possible, ensuring timely updates without manual intervention.

Another notable change affects the handling of applicants and inventors in patent applications. When an applicant is removed from an application, they will now also be removed as the inventor. Previously, removing an applicant did not affect inventor status.

Finally, when updating an application, users will notice a new feature on the final confirmation page, often referred to as the 'green screen.' This page will now include a link labeled 'View this request in your application history,' allowing applicants to quickly access relevant patent details within their account.

These updates reflect the UK IPO’s commitment to enhancing the efficiency and user-friendliness of its patents service, supporting inventors, applicants, and representatives through improved digital tools and processes.
