UK Intellectual Property Office Unveils Updated Roadmap for New Patents Service Enhancements

On 1 April 2026, the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) officially launched its new patents service to the public, marking a significant modernization of the patent application process. Since the launch, the service has processed approximately 10,000 transactions, including 3,500 patent applications, and attracted 3,000 new users.

Recognizing the importance of ongoing refinement, the IPO has committed to continuous improvements of the service. In February 2026, the IPO published its first roadmap outlining planned enhancements. The current update provides a comprehensive overview of completed improvements and previews forthcoming developments.

The IPO continues to collaborate closely with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and other service users to prioritize and shape the roadmap initiatives.

Among the notable achievements, the IPO has completed all improvements promised prior to the service launch. These include enhancements to the 'derivation of right' section in patent applications, allowing filers to more accurately specify how rights were derived from the inventor.

Additionally, users can now sign up for the patents service directly via the GOV.UK website, streamlining account creation and access.

Responding to strong user feedback, the IPO is accelerating the rollout of a feature that enables immediate playback of application details following patent submission. This enhancement aims to improve transparency and user confidence in the filing process.

Conversely, the IPO is removing the 'groups' feature, which previously allowed administrators to restrict access to certain patents. This feature will be phased out for all users over the coming weeks.

The IPO emphasizes that these updates are part of a broader commitment to enhance the patents service continuously, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of applicants and stakeholders.

The IPO’s roadmap reflects a transparent and user-focused approach to digital transformation in intellectual property services, reinforcing the UK’s position as a leader in patent administration.

Further updates and detailed information about the roadmap can be accessed through the IPO’s official channels.

This development underscores the IPO’s dedication to delivering efficient, accessible, and user-friendly patent services in the digital age.
