USPTO Reports Ongoing Microsoft Word Issue Affecting Office Action Production via OC

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has confirmed that a technical issue affecting the integration of Microsoft Word with its Office Communication (OC) system has reemerged. This problem is currently preventing patent examiners from generating office actions, which are essential official communications in the patent examination process.

The USPTO's Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) service desk is actively monitoring the situation. Upon identifying the disruption, the OCIO promptly escalated the matter by filing a severity A ticket with Microsoft, indicating the highest priority level for resolution.

Microsoft is engaged in ongoing troubleshooting efforts alongside the USPTO to diagnose and resolve the root cause of the malfunction. Despite these efforts, the USPTO has not provided an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for when normal service will resume.

The USPTO reassures stakeholders that it is committed to restoring full functionality as swiftly as possible, recognizing the critical role that office actions play in patent prosecution workflows.

Users are advised to remain patient as the USPTO and Microsoft collaborate on this technical challenge. The agency has not indicated any alternative means for producing office actions during the outage.

This incident underscores the dependency of patent examination processes on integrated software tools and the importance of rapid response protocols when such tools experience failures.

The USPTO continues to prioritize transparency and will provide updates as new information becomes available regarding the resolution timeline and any interim measures.

For the latest status updates, users should consult the USPTO’s official system status communications.
