WIPO and ITU Launch IP Management Clinic Tailored for AI Startups and SMEs

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming innovation landscapes, creating significant opportunities for startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, these companies often encounter multifaceted intellectual property (IP) challenges involving software, data, patents, copyrights, trade secrets, licensing, and commercialization.

To address these complexities, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are collaborating to launch a special edition of the Intellectual Property Management Clinic (IPMC) specifically designed for AI-driven startups and SMEs.

The IPMC program aims to equip participating companies with expert mentoring, targeted workshops, and customized guidance. This support will help them identify, protect, manage, and leverage their IP and other intangible assets effectively to foster growth, attract investment, establish partnerships, and expand internationally.

Key features of the program include assistance in identifying and managing critical IP assets such as software, data, algorithms, brands, and inventions. Participants will receive comprehensive advice on IP strategy encompassing patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing, and AI-specific legal challenges.

The Clinic also focuses on enhancing participants’ readiness for investment opportunities, partnerships, technology transfer, and commercialization processes.

The official launch of this IPMC edition will take place as a hybrid event during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10 July 2026.

Each selected company will be paired with a dedicated IP expert who will provide individualized mentoring sessions. These sessions will concentrate on IP assessment, strategy development, AI-related guidance, and the creation of a tailored IP roadmap to support the company’s specific needs.

The program is highly selective, with only 20 companies to be admitted. Interested AI startups and SMEs are encouraged to apply to benefit from this unique opportunity to strengthen their IP strategies, attract investment, and accelerate their growth trajectories.
