WIPO Grants Geographical Indication Status to Sindhri and Chaunsa Mangoes from Pakistan

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has officially registered the Sindhri and Chaunsa varieties of mangoes as Geographical Indications (GIs), recognizing them as distinctive products originating from the Sindh region of Pakistan. This registration marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s agricultural exports, particularly in the mango sector.

Sindhri and Chaunsa mangoes are among the most celebrated varieties cultivated in Sindh, known for their unique taste, aroma, and quality. The GI status granted by WIPO legally protects these mangoes, ensuring that only mangoes grown in the designated geographical area can be marketed under these names.

Pakistan exports over 120,000 tons of mangoes annually to key markets including the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The recognition of Sindhri and Chaunsa mangoes as GIs is expected to enhance the brand value of Pakistani mangoes internationally and help prevent misuse or misrepresentation of these varieties.

The registration aligns with Pakistan’s broader strategy to safeguard its indigenous agricultural products and promote them globally through intellectual property rights frameworks. By securing GI status, Pakistan can better leverage its mango varieties in competitive international markets.

This development was reported by Pakistan Today and highlights the increasing importance of geographical indications in protecting regional specialties and supporting export growth.

The vendor landscape in Pakistan, including markets such as Multan, benefits from this recognition as it adds credibility and authenticity to the mangoes sold domestically and abroad.

WIPO’s GI registration serves as an important tool for producers and exporters, providing legal recourse against counterfeit or falsely labeled products, thereby preserving the reputation of Sindhri and Chaunsa mangoes.

Overall, the GI registration of Sindhri and Chaunsa mangoes by WIPO underscores Pakistan’s commitment to intellectual property protection and the promotion of its agricultural heritage on the global stage.
