Anand Pandit Stresses Need for Robust IP Frameworks in Indian Film Production

Indian cinema is witnessing a significant shift in how films are conceptualized and managed, with a growing emphasis on treating movies as long-term intellectual property assets rather than single-use products. Producers are increasingly recognizing the commercial potential of film titles, characters, and scripts, leveraging them across sequels, streaming platforms, and brand collaborations.

Titles and characters in Indian films are evolving into powerful brand identifiers, carrying substantial recall value and market potential. This transformation is enabling the creation of expansive franchises, where recurring elements can anchor multiple projects and revenue streams.

Producer Anand Pandit has highlighted the critical role of intellectual property protection in this changing landscape. He asserts that safeguarding IP elements is no longer a mere legal formality but a fundamental business necessity. In an industry where thematic and narrative similarities are common, Pandit believes that robust IP regulations are vital for ensuring fair credit and supporting sustainable careers for creators.

India’s legal system offers several mechanisms to protect creative works in the film and series sector. The Copyright Act provides protection for original literary works, including scripts, music, and films. Additionally, movie titles, franchise logos, and catchphrases can be registered as trademarks, while character rights safeguard unique film characters. These legal protections are increasingly important for managing the expanding landscape of intellectual property and for capitalizing on licensing and ancillary revenue opportunities.

Recent trends at the box office underscore the growing influence of franchises on IP planning. Films such as Dhurandhar and Animal are being developed with sequels and spin-offs in mind, featuring key characters designed for future appearances. For example, in Pathaan, Salman Khan reprises his role as Tiger, while Tiger 3 brings back Shah Rukh Khan as Pathaan and Hrithik Roshan as Kabir, all under a unified studio banner. This approach enables a single company to build a shared cinematic universe from its intellectual property assets.

Pandit advocates for treating films as the foundation for broader IP exploitation, arguing that this strategy can elevate Brand India on the global stage. As international audiences increasingly seek authentic Indian narratives, focusing on original IP ensures that both creative and financial rewards remain with Indian creators.

However, Pandit also points to ongoing challenges, such as the misuse of intellectual property in advertising and remakes. He emphasizes the need for greater awareness among producers, writers, and technicians regarding the practical aspects of IP rights. According to Pandit, a well-defined IP strategy is essential for long-term industry growth and will encourage higher-quality storytelling, ultimately shaping the future of the Indian entertainment sector.
