ByteDance and MPA Forge Pact to Enhance AI Video Intellectual Property Protections

ByteDance and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at bolstering copyright protections for AI-generated video and image models developed by the Chinese technology company. The agreement was announced on Monday, marking a significant step in addressing intellectual property concerns raised by Hollywood stakeholders.

This development follows several months of dialogue between ByteDance and the MPA, which escalated after ByteDance received a cease-and-desist letter demanding it halt activities deemed infringing on copyrighted works. The MPA had accused ByteDance of disregarding established copyright laws that protect creators and support millions of American jobs.

The dispute gained public attention in February when a viral AI-generated video depicted actors Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in a staged fight, created using ByteDance’s Seedance platform. The video sparked alarm within the entertainment industry, prompting the MPA to publicly criticize ByteDance’s use of AI technology without adequate protections for intellectual property rights.

According to Variety, the newly signed MOU outlines a framework designed to safeguard Hollywood’s intellectual property across ByteDance’s suite of AI tools, including Seedance and Seedream. The agreement coincides with the recent release of Seedance 2.5 and Seedream 50 Pro, which reportedly incorporate enhanced IP protection measures.

Charles Rivkin, Chairman and CEO of the MPA, emphasized the importance of copyright in the film and television sectors. He stated, “Today’s agreement illustrates our belief that copyright is a cornerstone of the film and television industry — and reinforces our commitment to protect creative content.” Rivkin also highlighted the constructive engagement between the MPA and ByteDance over recent months to implement meaningful guardrails on the company’s AI platforms.

John Rogovin, General Counsel for ByteDance, echoed this sentiment, affirming the company’s respect for intellectual property rights worldwide. He remarked, “We believe responsible innovation in AI goes hand in hand with meaningful protections for rightsholders.” Rogovin expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts with the MPA and its members to strengthen safeguards across ByteDance’s generative AI services.

The MOU establishes an important framework for ongoing cooperation as AI technology continues to evolve across various products and platforms. The MPA described the agreement as a crucial advancement in recognizing that intellectual property can and should be protected within the generative AI space.

This formalized collaboration between ByteDance and the MPA reflects a broader industry trend toward balancing innovation in AI with the protection of creative rights. It also signals a commitment from both parties to continue refining and enforcing IP safeguards in the rapidly developing field of AI-generated content.

The agreement is expected to influence how AI tools are developed and deployed in the entertainment industry, potentially serving as a model for future partnerships between technology companies and content creators.

As generative AI platforms become more prevalent, the need for clear legal frameworks and protections for intellectual property rights remains paramount. The ByteDance-MPA MOU represents a proactive approach to addressing these challenges through dialogue and mutual cooperation.

The MPA’s public statements and ByteDance’s responsiveness underscore the importance of collaboration in navigating the complex intersection of AI innovation and copyright law.

This agreement may also impact regulatory discussions and industry standards related to AI-generated media, highlighting the evolving nature of intellectual property enforcement in the digital age.

Both parties have committed to continuing their work together to fortify protections and ensure that creative industries can thrive alongside technological advancements.
