Thailand is intensifying efforts to convert its cultural heritage into a dynamic economic driver through a robust national intellectual property strategy. Central to this initiative is the Intellectual Property Development Plan 2026–2027, approved by the National Intellectual Property Policy Committee in August 2025, marking the most comprehensive reform of the country’s IP architecture in recent years.
The plan integrates proactive legal reforms, enhanced enforcement mechanisms, improved government services, and public engagement campaigns. The Ministry of Commerce has reaffirmed its commitment to cultivating an IP-friendly ecosystem that supports creators from the inception of ideas through to commercialization.
The Department of Intellectual Property is tasked with elevating Thailand’s standing in the Global Innovation Index by focusing on six strategic pillars: legal reform, stronger enforcement, improved public services, awareness-building, SME empowerment, and international alignment. This multi-faceted approach aims to signal to creators, investors, and trade partners that Thailand prioritizes intellectual property as a core element of national development.
In a pioneering move, Thailand is among the first countries to adopt the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Creative Economy Data Model. This collaboration between WIPO, the Department of Intellectual Property, and the Creative Economy Agency (CEA) is designed to measure and enhance the country’s creative economy, thereby amplifying its cultural soft power on the global stage.
The CEA has set ambitious targets for 2026, including the cultivation of over 300,000 creative entrepreneurs and professionals, the generation of more than 350 new commercial IP works, and a 5 percent increase in the Gross Value Added of Thailand’s creative industries. Complementing these goals, the agency plans to launch Thailand’s first dedicated international marketplace for content and IP trading, positioning the nation as a hub for creative commerce.
A prominent figure embodying the success of Thailand’s IP strategy is HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya. With a portfolio exceeding 500 registered intellectual properties spanning fashion, textile design, fine art, and classical music composition, the Princess has created a commercial model that has generated over 200 billion baht in economic value for local communities.
Her achievements have garnered international acclaim, including a WIPO Award for Creative Excellence, underscoring the global recognition of Thailand’s innovative approach to linking IP protection with socio-economic development and cultural diplomacy.
Thailand’s comprehensive approach demonstrates how rigorous intellectual property stewardship can serve as a catalyst for economic growth, cultural preservation, and enhanced international influence. By leveraging its rich heritage through a modernized IP framework, Thailand aims to establish itself as a leader in the global creative economy.
