10x Genomics Files Two Gene Tech Patent Lawsuits Against Illumina

By Editorial Team

On October 21, 2025, 10x Genomics initiated legal action against biotech giant Illumina Inc. by filing two patent infringement lawsuits in Delaware federal court. 10x Genomics alleges that Illumina has violated nine genetic sequencing patents. The complaint argues that Illumina was aware of at least one of the patents due to its involvement in a previous $31 million verdict against a different company in the biology field.

The lawsuits were filed by law firms Shaw Keller, Tensegrity Law, and WilmerHale on behalf of 10x Genomics. The legal documents reveal the specific patents in question, including those related to barcoded beads, analysis of nucleic acid sequences, systems for reagent transfer between droplets, and spatially encoded biological assays.

The companies involved in the legal dispute are 10x Genomics Inc., Broad Institute, Bruker Corp., and Illumina Inc. The cases have been assigned to the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

10x Genomics' legal action underscores the importance of protecting intellectual property rights in the rapidly evolving field of genetic sequencing technologies. The outcome of these lawsuits could have significant implications for the biotech industry and the future development of gene technology.
