ByteDance Suspends Global Launch of Seedance 2.0 Amid Copyright Disputes

By Editorial Team

ByteDance has decided to suspend the global launch of its latest video-generation model, Seedance 2.0, following copyright disputes with major Hollywood studios and streaming platforms. The company had initially planned to release Seedance 2.0 worldwide by mid-March but has put those plans on hold due to legal challenges.

Legal Allegations

Disney has filed a lawsuit against ByteDance, alleging that the company used Disney characters to train and power Seedance 2.0 without authorization. The legal action was prompted by viral videos in China, including one depicting a fictional fight between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Disney claims that ByteDance incorporated a stolen library of copyrighted characters from franchises like Star Wars and Marvel into Seedance 2.0, presenting them as public-domain clip art.

Model Features

Seedance 2.0, unveiled in February, is tailored for professional film, e-commerce, and advertising purposes. The model can process text, images, audio, and video simultaneously, offering cost-effective content production solutions. Industry experts have drawn comparisons between Seedance 2.0 and models developed by Chinese AI companies like DeepSeek, Anthropic, and OpenAI. Tech leaders such as Elon Musk have praised Seedance 2.0 for its ability to generate cinematic storylines with minimal input.

Company Response

ByteDance has responded to the legal threats by US studios, including Disney, by committing to prevent unauthorized use of intellectual property on its AI video generator. The company's legal team is actively working to address and resolve potential legal issues, while engineers are implementing safeguards to prevent further intellectual property violations. ByteDance has not confirmed whether it will proceed with a global launch of Seedance 2.0 once these legal matters are resolved.
