On 25th March, the European Patent Office (EPO) welcomed a delegation from the German Association of Industry IP Experts (VPP) to discuss shared priorities and future collaboration opportunities. The meeting, held in Munich, was led by EPO Vice-President Christoph Ernst and VPP President Peter Berg.
The discussions centered around fostering technology transfer, empowering startups, and supporting economic growth within the European patent system. VPP emphasized the importance of collaboration to enhance innovation and highlighted the significance of tools like the EPO Observatory's Deep Tech Finder and the Patent Standards explorer in informing strategic decisions.
The Unitary Patent system was a key topic, with the EPO Technology Dashboard confirming its increasing popularity, especially among smaller businesses. VPP acknowledged the system's benefits but stressed the importance of considering the specific interests of the German industry.
Both delegations agreed on the importance of integrating AI into patent processes to improve efficiency and quality. They commended the EPO's AI policy, emphasizing a human-centric approach to AI implementation.
The Quality Action Plan 2026, aimed at enhancing the European patent system's accessibility and quality, was also discussed. Measures include integrating AI into core tools, continuous investment in staff, and the launch of Science and Technology Forums to keep examiners updated on technological advancements.
Looking ahead, the EPO and VPP are committed to collaborating to ensure innovation flourishes and the patent system remains accessible to all.
Founded in 1950, the VPP represents 2,900 patent professionals in the DACH region. The association plays a vital role in advocating for industry IP experts and shaping the future of the patent system.
