The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has rejected one of Apple's challenges to claims in a mobile device user interface patent while ruling that most of the challenged claims in another patent were invalid. The decision by the PTAB comes after Apple had filed challenges to two touch screen patents. The first patent, numbered 10,649,580, pertains to devices, methods, and graphical user interfaces for manipulating user interface objects with visual and/or haptic feedback. The second patent, numbered 10,656,755, relates to a gesture-equipped touch screen system, method, and computer program product. Law360 reported that the PTAB found Apple's challenge to the claims in the first patent to be unconvincing, upholding the validity of those claims. However, in the case of the second patent, the PTAB determined that the majority of the challenged claims were indeed invalid. The law firms involved in the case include Fish & Richardson and Norton Rose. Companies affected by the ruling include Apple Inc. and Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. The government agencies overseeing the case are the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battles surrounding touch screen technology patents. The outcome will likely have implications for the parties involved and could influence future patent disputes in the tech industry.
