Carolina Reaches 200 IP-Based Startup Milestone
UNC-Chapel Hill Celebrates Major Achievement in Entrepreneurship

UNC-Chapel Hill has achieved a significant milestone by launching 200 startups based on the University's Intellectual Property (IP), placing it among an elite group of U.S. research universities. This accomplishment highlights the University's dedication to translating laboratory discoveries into impactful products and services.
According to a recent analysis by Innovate Carolina, only about 10% of the more than 260 U.S. universities that responded to the Association of University Technology Managers survey have reported launching 200 or more IP-based startups since tracking began in 1991.
Kelly Parsons, director of technology commercialization at Innovate Carolina, emphasized the creativity and research excellence of Carolina's faculty and inventors, attributing the milestone to UNC-Chapel Hill's thriving entrepreneurial culture. The launch and support of startups by UNC innovators have accelerated the journey from discovery to real-world solutions, leading to job creation, economic growth, and improved lives.
Key Achievements and Impact
UNC-Chapel Hill's fiscal year 2025 impact analysis by Innovate Carolina revealed the following key statistics:
- 12 new IP-based startups were launched in fiscal year 2025, tying the all-time single-year record.
- More than 55% of Carolina's IP-based ventures remain active.
- 77% of active Carolina IP-based startups (83 companies) are headquartered in North Carolina, spanning 11 counties.
- Carolina IP-based startups have generated $475 million in annual revenue.
- These startups have created 3,280 jobs worldwide, including 1,243 in North Carolina.
Since 1950, all UNC-affiliated startups have raised a cumulative funding of $48.9 billion and created over 131,000 jobs globally. A UNC-affiliated startup is defined as an incorporated firm with a verified legal formation date and a clear connection to UNC-Chapel Hill, founded by faculty, staff, or students during their time at the University or within five years of departing.
Recent Startup Highlights
Among the 12 IP-based startups launched in fiscal year 2025 are:
- Goldie Health: A digital platform that assists agencies in identifying individuals at risk of opioid overdose and connecting them with personalized care.
- MaiaZura: Provides immersive virtual reality training for healthcare professionals.
- InoKare Therapeutics: Developing small-molecule inhibitors of IP6K to treat obesity and related disorders.
- Persistence Therapeutics: Offers a sponge-like implant that produces CAR-T cells inside the patient's body, potentially reducing the time and cost of cancer therapy.
Support for Founders
Carolina founders receive support from the UNC Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) and KickStart Venture Services, both integral parts of Innovate Carolina. OTC guides inventors through the commercialization process, from patent evaluation to industry partnerships, and has facilitated the market launch of 56 research-based products. KickStart provides early-stage funding, education, and on-campus accelerator space to nurture startup formation and growth.
Mireya McKee, director of KickStart Venture Services, emphasized the comprehensive support programs offered to founders, including advisor networks, grant funding, accelerator space, and investor connections, designed to assist entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey.
