Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of IP in unlocking economic value and preventing the exploitation of original ideas. “Many of our youth are developing innovative solutions in fintech, agriculture, and health. However, without adequate IP protection, these ideas are vulnerable to theft and commercial misuse,” she stated. Dr. Zawedde underscored the government’s commitment to supporting a thriving innovation ecosystem where creators can benefit financially and socially from their inventions.

The clinic also highlighted the alarming gap in IP knowledge among young entrepreneurs and students. According to the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), the number of startups formally protecting their innovations remains low, despite increasing entrepreneurial activity in the tech sector. The new IP toolkit aims to address this gap by offering user-friendly resources, simplified application procedures, and guidelines on copyright, trademarks, patents, and trade secrets.

Experts from the Uganda Law Society and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) were also present to provide advisory sessions on legal pathways, dispute resolution, and strategies for international IP protection. Panel discussions encouraged startups to view IP not only as a legal safeguard but also as a valuable asset that can attract investors, generate revenue through licensing, and enhance competitiveness.

In parallel with the clinic, a national conference on intellectual property and innovation was held to explore broader themes, including gender equity in innovation, the role of universities in patent development, and opportunities for public-private partnerships to scale protected technologies.

The Kampala Innovation Clinic forms part of a series of IP outreach programs being rolled out across Uganda to empower the next generation of innovators. These efforts align with the government’s Digital Transformation Roadmap and Uganda Vision 2040, both of which place innovation and knowledge-based development at the center of economic growth.
