High-Stakes IP Showdown: PSI Sues iST Over Alleged Tech Theft

PSI, a leading semiconductor backend service provider, has accused iST, a rival in the field of failure analysis and reliability testing, of illegally obtaining and using proprietary technology that PSI claims was developed in-house over several years. According to court documents, PSI alleges that former employees who moved to iST may have leaked confidential blueprints and methodologies, which are now reportedly being used to gain competitive advantage.

🚨 Confidential Tech at the Heart of the Dispute

The disputed technology reportedly involves advanced semiconductor reliability testing processes, which are vital for ensuring chip quality before deployment in high-performance systems. PSI claims this proprietary process is a key differentiator in its service offerings and has been developed under strict confidentiality agreements.

iST has denied any wrongdoing, stating it operates under a strict code of ethics and IP compliance. They take IP protection very seriously. They are confident that our technology is independently developed, and we will vigorously defend against these allegations.”

Legal experts believe this case could set a significant precedent for how Taiwan’s courts handle trade secret enforcement in the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry. Unlike patent disputes, trade secret cases are harder to prove, as they often rely on circumstantial evidence and forensic investigation into internal documents, employee records, and digital trails.

“Semiconductor firms invest heavily in R&D, and when employees switch companies, IP leakage becomes a major risk,” said IP attorney Lin Wei-Han, who is not involved in the case. “This case is a reminder for companies to reinforce IP safeguards and employee training.”

🧩 A Bigger Picture

This legal skirmish comes amid a broader global push for IP security in the tech sector, especially in the semiconductor supply chain — a critical area of geopolitical and economic interest. Taiwan, home to giants like TSMC and a dense network of chip-related firms, is under increasing pressure to strengthen IP protections and regulate employee mobility in sensitive tech sectors.
