The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism signed the first agreement with Spain’s Patent and Trademark Office and the second with Morocco’s Office of Industrial and Commercial Property. Both agreements focus on enhancing international collaboration in IP administration, harmonizing best practices, and fostering innovation-driven economic growth.
According to UAE officials, these partnerships mark a pivotal step in aligning the UAE’s IP infrastructure with global standards. They underscore the country’s ambition to become a regional hub for knowledge-based industries, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation.
The MoUs include provisions for cooperation in digitizing IP services, integrating AI and emerging technologies in patent processes, and training talent in IP-related fields. The focus will be on speeding up patent registrations, improving service delivery, and supporting startups and inventors in securing IP protection both locally and internationally.
“These agreements reflect our commitment to building a competitive knowledge economy,” said Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy. “Strengthening our IP ecosystem through international cooperation will support innovation and attract global investments into the UAE.”
The partnership with Spain is expected to open doors to stronger economic relations with European markets, while collaboration with Morocco builds on the UAE’s growing influence in North Africa. Both countries expressed a mutual desire to exchange technical expertise and streamline IP-related procedures.
This announcement follows the UAE’s recent efforts to modernize its IP laws, enhance enforcement mechanisms, and raise public awareness about the importance of protecting intellectual assets.
With the signing of these MoUs, the UAE is not only improving its domestic IP system but also demonstrating leadership in international IP diplomacy. These steps reaffirm its vision to transition into an innovation-led economy, in line with its national strategies such as "We the UAE 2031" and the "National Innovation Strategy."
