By Editorial Team
In a recent development, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) has ruled in favor of Toyota and Kia by invalidating a significant portion of the claims in a patent related to vehicle e-keys. The patent was challenged by both automakers, who were facing allegations of patent infringement in a federal court lawsuit in Texas.
The patent in question, numbered 11,738,659, pertains to vehicles and cloud systems designed for sharing e-Keys to access and operate vehicles. Following the challenge by Kia and Toyota, the PTAB decided to invalidate most of the patent claims, marking a significant victory for the two automotive giants.
Law360 reported that the law firms involved in the case include Bunsow De Mory, Finnegan, and Quinn Emanuel. On the corporate side, Kia Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation were the companies challenging the patent’s validity.
Furthermore, the PTAB’s decision is expected to have a substantial impact on the ongoing legal battle between the parties in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The ruling could potentially shift the dynamics of the lawsuit and influence the outcome of the patent infringement allegations against Kia and Toyota.
